This blog was thrust into a quick hiatus while I sat my exams but now it's past time to get up and running again. I'm currently settled on the sofa at my parents' house while everyone's at work, with my (yes, officially diagnosed, apparently it's a thing) neurotic Jack Russell curled up next to me in a rare moment of tranquillity. The French window is open and beyond it lies a lake that is rapidly becoming strangled by duckweed. I've escaped the bubble of university to relax, write and job-hunt at home, where there's far less likely to be an unholy mixture of rotting food and smashed glass on the kitchen floor (oh, the joy of halls) and plenty of food in the fridge, provided I do most of the cooking while I'm here.
What to write about? In between trawling jobsites I've been daydreaming about the day I become a real paid writer, but first inspiration has to strike, for the article that's going to launch my freelance career. As I keep being reminded, both by my mother and my failed job applications to journalism grad schemes, writing for the student paper isn't enough. Cue plenty of soul-searching and digging through my experiences to find what exactly makes me unique, worth reading about. So far, this has resulted in a terrible free-form poem, binge-watching Grace & Frankie on Netflix and rediscovering The Sims 2 on my dad's old PC. Ahem.
I've also got to decide what this blog's going to be. I love writing about all kinds of things - food, TV, films, books, wellbeing, etc. etc. etc. - so I reckon it would be a good space to play, dotted with the occasional well-researched opinion piece. Sound good? Whatever I write, I must write, and this will be the best place to do it. This little reflective piece is is the starting gun. Thanks for reading and I hope you'll follow elfie as it grows and develops.
Until next time.
